Hughes would prove to be a demanding taskmaster during the period of development and construction. He had never looked on aviation as a moneymaker, he insisted; he was in it because he had a passion for it. Then he got to the nub: three months before, Brewster had attempted to lobby him in behalf of Pan Am, he said, and having failed, they were both out to destroy him.
Pan Am had put great pressure on him to merge Trans World with Pan Am and co-sponsor the chosen-instrument plan. Brewster himself had told him at the Mayflower Hotel that the probe would be dropped if he joined forces with Pan Am. He was also the bosom friend of Pan American Airways. This Hughes refused to do. Whereupon Brewster investigated Hughes, and, during the period when he was before Brewster's Senate committee, Hughes's telephone wire and that of his attorneys were tapped, apparently under the off-stage direction of Henry Grunewald, who admits that at various times he checked telephone wires for Pan American Airways.
Grunewald and others deny this. Nevertheless this is the conclusion which Senators are forced to arrive at. No wonder businessmen who come to Washington are worried about talking over telephones. They never know when some competitor, perhaps with the cooperation of a Senate committee, is listening in. Yet this is supposed to be the capital of the USA not Moscow.
There was no way to tell, from one day to another, while Mr. Hughes was resident among us earthlies, what would come from the mind and pen of the world's most famous recluse. From this relation the young and eager Howard gained his interest in the motion picture business, which he would first enter into by creating the film Two Arabian Nights in The movie, financially a flop loosing over a million dollarsstill gave Hughes the lessons in the movie business which he would later use to full advantage when navigating his other films to release despite their controversial natures.
Howard always pushed the envelope with his motion pictures as he did with his other productions. Scarface was censured for violence and later, inThe Outlaw received similar controversy for its sexual content. Famously Hughes designed a special kind of half-cup bra for the curvaceous Jane Russell so that her breasts would look full enough for her role in the film.
Inhe set up the Hughes Aircraft Company, a subsidiary of Hughes Tools, which was born out of a project converting a military aircraft of former US Air Service stock to a racing craft. The company later produced the H-1, the most advanced aircraft ofwhen it broke an air speed record by flying mph. Again ina variant of the H-1 Racer, this time with longer wings, won the transcontinental speed record.
He topped these records by a round-the-world flight in a customized Lockheed 14, which took only three days and nineteen hours. With war looming, Hughes Aircraft concentrated on military contracts, however, Hughes proved unreliable for this as two of his famous follies proved. Part of the problem was that he insisted on a great level of secrecy and would reveal little of his projects till their final unveiling, even to the USAAF.
He was also reluctant to use standardized materials, knowing that those that he proffered would achieve better results, even though they were more expensive. Both of his craft flew inone of them crashing, killing two almost along with the test pilot, Hughes himself. This was the XF11 spy plane, which was developed for wartime reconnaissance but arrived two years late.
The idea was sound if unorthodox for its day and in many ways visionary. The contracts were specifically awarded by President Franklin D. InHughes' life returned to the spotlight with the feature film The Aviatorwhich depicted his early days. Leonardo DiCaprio played the billionaire as a dashing, troubled young man. He was nominated for an Academy Award for his portrayal of Hughes.
