Maddalena Lombardini studied violin, showing enough promise that she was allowed to leave the institution in order to have private lessons with the composer and violinist Giuseppe Tartini in Padua. InTartini sent his pupil a letter outlining his views on violin technique.

Published posthumously, Tartini's letter to Lombardini was, for many years, the primary means by which Lombardini's name was recognized. It's also interesting that Tartini's letter to Maddalena Lombardini was translated into English and published by Charles Burney, the novelist Fanny Burney 's father. YouTube has several examples of her music - violin concertos and string quartets - herehereand here. Recordings of her music are not hard to find on the internet. Lombardini, who had once been compared to the great Pietro Nardini, apparently died in obscurity in Venice on May 18,at age Nonetheless, her compositions and Tartini's letter have made her immortal.
