Toggle the table of contents. Michael Moon was quickly replaced by Pete Blakk. Timi Hansen left the band after the tour to be with his family. He was replaced by Hal Patino. With his new line up intact, King was now ready to record one of his most elaborate concept albums ever. THEM was released in June All seemed to be going King's way. Patino and Blakk were axed from the line up. King had no record deal and only one member in his solo band. King heard that Hank was writing music that King would like to hear. The result was a Mercyful Fate reunion with all original members excpet Kim Ruzz who was quoted as saying that he was happy being a postal worker. He was replaced by Snowy Shaw.
A tour followed but Timi Hansen left the band again to be with his family. Sharlee D'Angelo replaced him. This time another band member had left the band. Snowy Shaw was replaced by Bjarne T. Holm for the tour in support of TIME. King went into the studio in September, with a new King Diamond line up and new record label to record the first King Diamond since Andy La Rocque was still in the line up with the rest being newcomers.
King initially wanted to tour with both bands in the US but promoters discouraged him from doing that due to the sad state of music in the US. So instead King went on tour with Mercyful Fate. With this line-up, the group recorded their first two studio albums: 's Melissa and 's Don't Break the Oath. In spite of their reputation as one of the most acclaimed bands of the European heavy metal scene of the s, Mercyful Fate were the subject of controversy due to their satanic imagery, and one of their songs "Into the Coven" from Melissa later gained notoriety for appearing as one of the PMRC 's "Filthy Fifteen" list of objectionable songs.
After disbanding in due to musical differences, four out of the five members of Mercyful Fate reunited in and recorded the album In the Shadowswhich was released the following year. During the s, the band released four more studio albums and went through several line-up changes. Mercyful Fate went on hiatus inbut had reunited on occasion during the s.
On August 1,it was announced that Mercyful Fate were reuniting on a more permanent basis, with plans to tour [ 4 ] [ 13 ] and release a new album, which will be their first since 9 in Mercyful Fate was originally formed in Copenhagen in the spring of[ 15 ] following the dissolution of the band Brats. Guns and Guns N' Roses briefly joined the band around this time.
The Beginning was released on June 24,and featured material from the band's self-titled EP, as well as rare live and studio recordings. Holm for the Time Tour. Holm reunited to re-record the songs "Evil" and "Curse of the Pharaohs". This was the first time drummer Ruzz appeared with the band since the split. On August 1,it was announced that Mercyful Fate would be performing an unspecified number of concerts throughout Europe in the summer of Holm on drums, Mike Wead on guitar and Joey Vera on bass, the latter of whom was filling in for Timi Hansen, who was battling cancer; [ 48 ] Vera then became their full-time bass player after Hansen died on November 4,shortly after his 61st birthday.
In a May interview with Heavy magazine, Shermann said that he had "written six or seven songs" for the band's new album. On January 16,Mercyful Fate announced that they had "mutually decided to split ways" with Vera. Mercyful Fate were a part of the first wave of black metalalong with other groups, such as VenomBathoryand Hellhammer. As many of the band's songs featured lyrics about Satanism and the occult [ 11 ] [ 59 ] and King Diamond was among the first black metal musicians to use the now famous corpse paint[ 60 ] Mercyful Fate was a pioneer in developing black metal, [ 11 ] [ 59 ] although their musical style was not as much an influence as that of other first wave bands.
Mercyful Fate have been cited as a formative influence on the s thrash metal scene, including two-fourths of the genre's "Big Four" — Metallica and Slayer. Since then, the band has performed the song various times live with several members of Mercyful Fate. We have been friends with them for 23 years. The first time I ever played on some other record was with them — I was in Dallas to make Return of the Vampire in They have been a very, very big inspiration for our sound.
