Evans was introduced to music at a young age and formed his first street vocal group at the age of eight. While attending school, he also learned to play the drums and piano, and continued to practice his vocal skills. In the evenings, Ernest worked in a supermarket, entertaining shoppers with his singing and banter. The owner of the store, Henry Colt, was impressed by Evans' performances and took every opportunity to arrange auditions for him.
