X marks the spot when it comes to unearthing lost gems from the hidden chest of electronic music past. They recorded a tape which led to their signing to the 4AD label. Martyn had emerged as a key figure in the group through his writing, playing and production efforts.
Having produced the debut album, Martyn is modest about his achievements, preferring to let the record do the talking. Steven Young started his musical career in a "sort of punk band" The Nobodyz, doing support gigs for such groups as The Psychedelic Furs in the early part of their career. A multi-instrumentalist, Steven is a quiet partner in the group, co-writing the songs with his brother Martyn from such influences as Alfred Hitchcock, spaghetti westerns and reggae rhythms.
Yet in five years, brothers Martyn and Steven Young together with Ian Robbins and vocalists Lorita Grahame and Debian Curry had left a groundbreaking, gratifying legacy. Steven and Ian sadly passed away in recent years, so this compilation — released as a double album with gatefold sleeve featuring a new Tillmans photograph — arrives as a tribute to them, as well as a bona fide art artefact.
For all their fascination with studio technique, these tracks flow with a light-footed ease, their catholic influences ranging freely over spacious, rock-steady grooves. Being an authentic fanboy, Tillmans has elected to omit one or two better-known numbers, like Tarantula made famous by This Mortal Coil and even their would-be World Cup Theme.

The pressures of sudden success and the long-running litigation caused by the use of samples resulted in the band never recording as Colourbox again. For a brief time following Colourbox's dissolution, Martyn Young served as a producer on records by acts as diverse as The Christians and fellow labelmates The Wolfgang Presswhilst former singer Lorita Grahame lent her vocals to a record released by short-lived One Little Indian act Hit the Roof on a cover of Edwin Starr 's "Contact".
The collection, marking the 30th anniversary of the group, was sequenced by Martyn Young. InColourbox were the subject of an exhibition, Music of the Band -curated by Wolfgang Tillmans at his Between Bridges gallery in Berlin. A CD compilation of 16 tracks selected by Tillmans was released by 4AD to tie in with the exhibition.
